Eric Davies, President of the Welsh Pony and Cob Society – carried the torch on his mare Angerdd in Aberaeron

Well, what a day! It was a great and unexpected privilege to be asked to carry the Olympic Flame on a Welsh Cob during its first leg in Aberaeron on 27 May 2012.

It was a pleasure to undertake this duty in my capacity as the President of the Welsh Pony and Cob Society on a home bred welsh Cob mare, Maesmynach Angerdd. What luck that the Society had this year a President that lived locally and was able to ride!

My proudest moment was to stand on my 15.3hh mare in the centre of the excited crowd at the beginning of the first leg, with banners waving, people cheering and children and adults slowly engulfing the mare as I raised the flame for the first time in Aberaeron. The mare did not put a foot wrong – proof of the character and temperament of the Welsh Cob.

Following carrying the torch, I was asked to go down to the ‘Square field’ in the Centre of Aberaeron where the mare enjoyed meeting children.

An unforgettable day on the Ceredigion coastline on the best native breed in Britain – the Welsh Cob!
